The Glomerata is Auburn University's annually circulated yearbook. Every April, 12,000 copies of the 496 page "Glom" are distributed to Auburn students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The Glom serves to document the academic year in which it is produced; it includes photographs and stories about student life, athletics, faculty and administration achievements, the community, and organizations' activities.
I served as the copy editor of the Glomerata for one year, during which time I learned the importance of paying close attention to detail. Copy editing is often a tedious task, as it requires going through every comma and period, every jot and tittle, to make sure everything is correct. Yet this focus on detail is extremely important, for a publication that pays attention to everything, even the small things, creates a higher quality product.
Copy Editor
As the title suggests, my main task at the Glomerata was copy editing. It was my job to proofread and copy edit the body copy and the captions in the 496 page yearbook. My position also allowed me to work with other staff members if they had any stylistic questions.
Writer
In addition to my copy editing duties, my editor-in-chief also tasked me with writing copy for the opening pages of the 2011 Glomerata, as well as rewriting several pages that were not up to his standards.
